Composed from 1897 to the following year, and published in 1898. In 1897, Scriabin also composed his Piano Concerto. It was also the year he married Vera Ivanovna, a pianist who graduated from the Moscow Conservatory.
No. 1: G-sharp minor, 3/4 time, Andante
This collection opens with Scriabin's favored dynamic technique, building one large crescendo throughout the entire piece. A long-breathed melody in the right hand is accompanied by arpeggiated chords in the left hand, repeatedly ascending across a wide range. The piece concludes on a dominant chord.
No. 2: C-sharp minor, 6/8 time, Andante
In this piece, a 2-against-3 polyrhythm is occasionally heard. The melody interweaves scalar motion with disjunct intervals. Consequently, despite its brevity of only 20 measures, the piece presents a striking melodic line.
No. 3: B major, 3/4 time, Allegretto
The ornamental notes, punctuated by rests, are striking. The left hand, entering one beat later, serves to highlight the melody of this piece; however, as it occasionally becomes an arpeggio, it never loses its subtle assertiveness.
No. 4: B minor, 4/4 time, Andantino
The technique of cross-phrasing is employed. The right hand traverses a wide range within the phrase, varying its note values diversely. The left hand, while primarily based on eighth notes, occasionally exhibits wide leaps exceeding two octaves, yet requires a smooth performance.
