The earliest of Scriabin's works are the Canon from 1883 (at age 11) and the Nocturne from age 12. By 1886, at age 14, he had begun to compose large-scale works such as the Fantasy Sonata in G-sharp minor (WoO), followed by the Piano Sonata in E-flat major (WoO) from the following year to 1889. Composed around the same time as these two works was 3 Pieces, Op. 2.
It is said that Scriabin admired Chopin and Liszt from his youth, and significant influence from both can be observed in the melodic ideas and compositional style of his piano works from this period. Chopin's influence, in particular, was profound, discernible not only in his style but also in his choice of genres such as etudes, preludes, and mazurkas.
Etude, Op. 2-1
Composed in 1887, when Scriabin was 14 years old, this is the most famous and frequently performed piece in this collection today. Considering its title, "Etude," it can be said that the piece aims to differentiate between the homophonic accompaniment and the melodic line. The two-measure opening theme is repeated multiple times with modulations reminiscent of Chopin's works.
Prelude, Op. 2-2
Like the Etude, this piece was composed in 1887. It is a short piece lasting about one minute. Following the structure of Chopin's Preludes, it features repetitions based on the two-measure opening theme. Although notated in 3/4 time, the music sounds as if it is in 9/8 time.
Impromptu à la Mazur, Op. 2-3
Unlike the preceding Etude and Prelude, this work differs in structure, being a rondo-form piece with a mazurka-like theme as its subject. Such a choice of form is also characteristic of Chopin's works.
