This is the first of the three sonatas, Hob. 50–52, known as the “English Sonatas” because they were composed during Haydn's visit to England in 1794–1795. It consists of three movements. It is relatively large in scale for a Haydn piano sonata.
First Movement
The first movement, in C major, is marked Allegro and is in 4/4 time. For the first six measures, the left hand plays only the tonic, but the theme gives a lively impression. In the transition to the second theme (from m. 34), the first theme played by the left hand is accompanied by scalar motion in the right hand. This pattern is seen throughout the development section (from m. 54). In the recapitulation (from m. 108), which follows after a fermata, the first theme is modified, but its melodic line is clearly presented. This movement is known for Haydn's “open pedal” indication.
Second Movement
The second movement, Adagio, is in 3/4 time and in F major. It is written in ternary form and possesses a graceful character, filled with ornamental notes throughout the movement. The middle section (from m. 24) begins in C minor. In the third section (from m. 34), which is a variation of the first section, even finer note values create more elaborate ornamental movement.
Third Movement
The third movement, Allegro molto, is in 3/4 time and in C major, the same key as the first movement. Although it appears to be a combination of variation and rondo forms, the opening theme is developed in such diverse ways that it is difficult to categorize it under a specific form.
