"Gesänge der Frühe" (Songs of Dawn) was Schumann's last work in which he was personally involved in the publication.
Below is a quote from a letter written by Schumann to his publisher F.W. Arnold on February 23, 1854, shortly before he, in a state of delusion, attempted to drown himself in the Rhine River:
"I do not wish to publish the Fugues, Op. 126, as they sound melancholic. Instead, I offer your esteemed company the five piano pieces, 'Gesänge der Frühe', which I have recently completed and dedicated to the poet W.B. von Arnim. This collection describes feelings experienced at dawn. However, it is more an expression of emotion than a depiction of scenery."
According to entries in Schumann's own household book (which he used as a diary), this work was composed over four days, from October 15 to 18, 1853. This was approximately four months before the aforementioned mental breakdown.
