An etude with a tempestuous musical character. Despite its perpetuum mobile-like construction, the right hand, which demands wide interval leaps, and the left-hand octaves, which carve out a surging, syncopated rhythm, create a ceaseless sense of dynamism. Moreover, changes in meter and irregular phrase structures (for example, the first section consists of five measures) subvert the listener's unconscious expectations, expressing strong emotion. In the middle section, while modulating through various keys, two melodies—one from the right hand's staccato on the downbeat and another from the left hand's inner voice—depict slowly descending arpeggios.
