This is one of the works not included in the first edition, but first published in the 1947 Complete Works of Rachmaninoff. It consists of two parts, forming a vivid contrast: the first part in C minor, reminiscent of a funeral march, possessing a solemn and profound pathos, and the second part, also in C minor, based on delicate arpeggios and having a gentle sense of exaltation. The musical idea from the latter part was later adapted for the latter half of the Piano Concerto No. 4, Op. 40 second movement. Although the concerto itself was completed in 1926, considering that the sketches were made between 1914 and 1917, the possibility that the reason for the withdrawal of this piece was the transfer of its ideas to the concerto cannot be denied.
