In the case of this type of variation, the initial theme (Aria) is the most crucial, as all subsequent variations are based on it. Therefore, this discussion will focus solely on the opening theme.
Measures 1-2
In measures 1 and 2, the tension increases during beats 2-3 respectively. Consequently, beats 1 and 4 should be played p. When comparing measure 1 and measure 2, measure 2 reaches the highest note, C, resulting in higher tension than measure 1; thus, measure 2 should be played with greater volume.
Measure 2 (Beat 4) and Measure 3 (Beginning)
The eighth note on the upbeat of beat 4 in measure 2 contains a passing tone that leads smoothly into the next measure. Although beat 1 of measure 3 abruptly modulates to E minor, starting p creates a seamless and natural flow.
Measures 3-4
The perceived tension in measure 3 may vary from person to person, feeling either weaker or stronger. During repetitions, it would be effective to apply a different dynamic than the first time. Measures 3-4 should be considered as a single unit.
Measures 5-8
Measures 5-7 constitute an ascending sequence, so the volume should gradually increase. Measure 8 ultimately resolves in D minor.
Measures 9-12
Measures 9-10 are a harmonic sequence; the volume can be set freely. Measures 11-12 return to A minor.
Performers are encouraged to apply dynamics as they perceive them. For instance, it is advisable to create a completely different atmosphere between measure 9 and measure 10, so please choose your dynamics accordingly.
For the latter half as well, it is recommended to play with different volume and timbre during repetitions compared to the first time.
