Most of Bach's pieces do not have tempo markings. When considering the question of "at what tempo should this piece be performed," it is often possible to understand the atmosphere and character by listening to other works written in the same key as the piece.
However, one helpful clue regarding tempo is to pay attention to the written ornaments. For example, please refer to measure 11 of this piece. When attempting to play the ornaments written in this measure, it is almost impossible at too fast a tempo. Furthermore, judging from the character of the piece, it is not a work intended to showcase technical prowess. Therefore, in conclusion, one cannot go wrong by setting the tempo for this piece to one where the ornaments in measures 11, 30, 32, etc., can be played "without undue difficulty."
Similar to the preceding piece, BWV 929, Bach's G minor is an expression of sorrow; thus, it should not proceed indifferently at a fast tempo. Nor is it a piece to be played energetically. Please express the sorrow delicately and slowly.
