This work is transmitted through the same manuscript source as "Allemande and Courante" BWV 838. It is considered a spurious work. While the possibility of it being a genuine work by Bach remains open, proving its authenticity is likely almost impossible.
From a stylistic perspective, it immediately appears that the true composer is someone else. The theme begins with a stepwise progression including appoggiaturas and features repeated octave leaps. This thematic construction already lacks the potential for fugal development. Nevertheless, in the latter half, a new motif descending in sixteenth notes develops in conjunction with the theme.
While the overall harmony does not display Bach's characteristic ingenuity, each thematic statement is led to a cadence through bold progressions. Coupled with the simple theme itself, it is a work that possesses a somewhat archaic sound.
