The second impromptu composed by Auric for piano. It was written in 1938 and published in 1939. A characteristic feature of Auric's creative output during this period was the increasing prominence of film music. In 1937, ten films for which he composed the music were released. Among the works composed in 1938, only the Woodwind Trio premiered in a concert setting. At that time, Auric's creative focus was on film music, as well as chansons and popular choral pieces aligned with the ideals of the People's Music Federation. The Impromptu in E major is characterized by a slow, lullaby-like tempo and lyrical melody, contrasting with the lively Impromptu in G major. As demonstrated in Février's recording, playing the two pieces side by side can highlight this contrast.

The sheet music cover states, "Published under the supervision of the Fédération Musicale Populaire." The Fédération Musicale Populaire was an organization that, in line with the ideals of the Popular Front (1936-1938), which dominated French politics at the time, aimed to popularize music among the masses from a communist perspective. Auric arranged folk songs and composed choral pieces for children for this organization. Le Chant du Monde, the company for which Février made recordings, was one of the first companies to sell commercial records in France and conducted publishing and recording activities in partnership with the Fédération Musicale Populaire.
