Auric composed six Impromptus for piano between 1936 and 1959. Nos. 3-5 were grouped together as Trois Impromptus (1940), while Nos. 1, 2, and 6 were published separately. The first two of these were both published by the same publisher, and the pianist Jacques Février, to whom the first Impromptu was dedicated, recorded both pieces together.
The Impromptu in G major, composed in July 1936, is characterized by its lively nature. A simple motif, reminiscent of a spinning top, develops, then transforms into a playful waltz, before abruptly concluding as an ascending motif is repeated.

The sheet music cover states, "Published under the supervision of the Fédération Musicale Populaire." The Fédération Musicale Populaire was an organization that, in line with the ideals of the Popular Front (1936-1938), which dominated French politics at the time, aimed to popularize music among the masses from a communist perspective. Auric arranged folk songs and composed choral pieces for children for this organization. Le Chant du Monde, the company for which Février made recordings, was one of the first companies to sell commercial records in France and conducted publishing and recording activities in partnership with the Fédération Musicale Populaire.
