It is no exaggeration to say that the key to playing this piece well is, above all else, balance. By achieving an exquisite balance, the music will flow smoothly.
The form is ABA, with A from measures 1-4, B from 5-13, and A from 14-18.
First, in section A, the left and right hands play notes alternately, which means they mark the beat. There are several ways to make this section flow smoothly without sounding rigid:
- Minimize the volume of the left hand If the left hand's volume is too high, the notes played by the right hand will be interrupted, and the sound will become very mechanical. Play the left hand as ppp as possible.
- Apply rubato Play as far away from the metronome as possible. By freely varying the tempo with rubato, you can avoid a mechanical performance.
- Vary the dynamics Ensure there are no sections where the volume remains constant. Adhere to the crescendos and diminuendos written in the score.
Section B is simply written with the left hand as accompaniment and the right hand playing the melody line. The left hand's thirds also serve to mark the beat, so play them as pp as possible. I want you to play them like a string instrument; that is, listen continuously to the sustained notes and avoid harsh attacks.
Strictly adhere to the dynamic markings written in this piece. In section B, vary the dynamics with a peak at measure 9.
