This work, believed to have been completed on June 16, 1918, was composed when she was 32 years old. It was published in 1922 in Leipzig by Robert Forberg and again in 1978 by the Croatian Music Institute (Hrvatski Glazbeni Zavod). It is dedicated to Dora's close friend, the Czech noblewoman Sidonie Nadherny von Borutin (1885-1950), who introduced Dora to the poet Rainer Maria Rilke (1875-1926) and the writer Karl Kraus (1874-1936). Around the time of World War I, Dora's works rapidly matured, leading to the successive creation of masterpieces such as the Cello Sonata, Op. 35, Piano Sonata, Op. 36, Piano Quintet, Op. 40, Symphony, Op. 41, and Violin Sonata No. 2 "Slavic," Op. 43. Composed after these numerous masterpieces, Hanabuki (Falling Cherry Blossoms), Op. 45, is written in an impressionistic style, demanding advanced performance technique, and is a beautiful piece that vividly evokes the scene of falling cherry blossoms.
