Composed around 1916, when Dora was about 31 years old. It was published in 1922 by Robert Forberg in Leipzig and again in 1978 by the Croatian Music Institute (Hrvatski Glazbeni Zavod). It is dedicated to Olga Schulz-Granitz, a music enthusiast from Zagreb. Dora was very close to the Schulz family and often enjoyed playing chamber music with them; her beautiful Cello Sonata, Op. 35, was also dedicated to the Schulzes. Olga's husband, Ernest Schulz, worked as a music critic in Zagreb. Composed the year after the Piano Sonata, Op. 36, these Two Intermezzi, Op. 38, demonstrate a considerably refined compositional technique. Their introspective sound world, characterized by dense harmonies, is reminiscent of Brahms's intermezzi. Both pieces are dreamlike and beautiful gems.
