This work is Moszkowski's last published work with an opus number. When it was published in Paris in 1920, his fame had already been declining for a decade. Changes in taste in piano music, the deaths of his wife and daughter, and his own illness made his activities difficult, leading to rare publications of his works and forcing him into poverty. It was amidst such circumstances that this educational work was published.
Although translated as "études" in Japanese, the modern title is 16 "Technical Sketches (esquisses techniques)". The choice of the word "sketch" (素描) likely stems from the idea of freely selecting and notating various performance techniques of composers from the era in which the composer lived.
While this might suggest a high level of difficulty, even in adversity, he maintained high ideals as a concert pianist, and the works demonstrate meticulous attention not only to mechanism but also to harmony and melody.
