Composed around 1902, when she was 17 years old. It is a work of remarkable emotional depth, surprising for a composition by a 17-year-old. Dora, who grew up as a princess in a castle, though from a distinguished aristocratic family, continually grappled with her circumstances. After her death, she did not wish to be interred in the grand mausoleum of the Pejačević family, but rather desired to be buried like an ordinary citizen. She now quietly rests in a secluded corner of the family estate. It is said that she requested donations to impoverished musicians instead of funeral flowers. This funeral march was performed at her funeral.
Written in 4/4 time and ABA ternary form, following the somber funeral march of the main section (A), the middle section (B) introduces a beautiful melody played with a lighter touch. The coda, after a crescendo, concludes quietly and gently in pianissimo, as if the footsteps of the funeral procession are fading into the distance.
