A collection of piano pieces composed in February 1933. All the pieces included were incidental music for Jean Giraudoux's play Intermezzo, which premiered in March of the same year. Consequently, the work is dedicated to Giraudoux and Louis Jouvet, who directed the premiere stage production.
This collection bears the subtitle "Petites pièces pour piano pour enfants" (Small Pieces for Piano for Children), and the title page of the autograph manuscript, owned by Éditions Salabert, also states "Petites pièces faciles pour piano" (Easy Small Pieces for Piano), indicating that Poulenc intended this collection to be accessible even for children. The composer further noted on the reverse side of the title page, "These pieces may be played consecutively, in the manner of a potpourri," though the phrase "in the manner of a potpourri" was later deleted. A potpourri, incidentally, is a musical piece that combines well-known melodies or fragments thereof.
The work consists of six pieces: "Valse tyrolienne (Joyeux)" (Tyrolean Waltz (Joyful)), "Staccato (Pas vite)" (Staccato (Not fast)), "Rustique (Vite, joyeux)" (Rustic (Fast, joyful)), "Polka (Sans hâte)" (Polka (Without haste)), "Petite ronde (Très vif – Rythmique)" (Little Rondo (Very lively – Rhythmic)), and "Coda (Tempo primo)" (Coda (First tempo)). Each piece is short, easily evoking the work's original function as incidental music for a play.
