After embarking on the “Suite bergamasque” in 1890, Debussy composed a mazurka the following year, and then this work was created after a certain interval (composed 1896, published 1901).
While still retaining elements of his early musical sensibility throughout, the piece also hints at Debussy's unique idiom, which would later fully blossom, thus serving as a pivotal point, a kind of crossroads. Masterpieces such as “Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune,” “Nocturnes” for orchestra, and “String Quartet” were composed prior to this work, and the masterpiece “Pelléas et Mélisande” was premiered shortly thereafter in 1902.
It exhibits the typical form of a suite. The first movement is dedicated to Mademoiselle de Romilly, the second to Madame E. Rouart, and the third to G. Colonne.
[First Movement] Prélude
It is composed of two distinctly different sections: one very intense, and the other lyrical and legato at a piano dynamic. A piece notable for its light, energetic motion and colorful impression. “Forcefully, with good rhythm.”
[Second Movement] Sarabande
The sarabande is a slow dance that was popular in Europe during the 17th and 18th centuries.
A piece with a noble atmosphere. “With elegant calm and slowness.”
[Third Movement] Toccata
It possesses a classical structure and begins “in the style of Scarlatti.” It was reportedly well-received at its premiere and performed repeatedly.
