Korngold's first piano sonata, completed in 1909 at the age of 12. Although it lacks an opus number and has a strong character as a study piece, it was published by Universal Edition in 1910, and only the third movement was premiered by Korngold himself at the Salzburg Music Festival in August of the same year. Prior to this, privately printed scores were sent to music professionals in 1909 (see the entry for Don Quixote). All three movements are written in a symphonic style, as if they were drafts for orchestral works, rather than being purely pianistic. The first movement is a tragic piece in D minor. The second movement consists of a lighthearted main section in D major and a trio that changes expression every few measures. The Passacaglia of the third movement was composed up to the 20th variation, based on a 7-measure lesson assignment by Alexander Zemlinsky. According to the recollections of his father, Julius Korngold, the idea of using this Passacaglia as the final movement of the piano sonata was based on Gustav Mahler's advice.
