Born in Hiratsuka City, Kanagawa Prefecture. He studied under Tomojiro Ikenouchi. While studying in the Composition Department of the Faculty of Music at Tokyo University of the Arts, he distinguished himself by consecutively winning awards at the music competition co-sponsored by NHK and Mainichi Shimbun (currently the Japan Music Competition). After graduation, he published works in a wide range of fields, including instrumental music, choral music, and children's songs. His major works include the choral suite "Kotan no Uta," which received the Grand Prize at the Arts Festival, and "Divertimento for Marimba and Alto Saxophone." In addition, he has numerous children's songs, exemplified by "Amefuri Kuma no Ko," which are widely sung and loved. He served as President of the Japan Children's Song Association and Chairman of the Council of the Japanese Society for Rights of Authors, Composers and Publishers (JASRAC).
