(December 31, 1813, Berlin — March 16, 1870, Berlin) German piano teacher and composer. His salon-style piano miniatures, which captured the popular taste of the time, gained immense popularity. He also arranged a piano version of Schubert's famous Lied, Erlkönig. Among his well-known works are The Bells of the Alps and Alpine Glow. The melody of Doll's Dream and Awakening has become ingrained in daily life in Japan.
