Born in Shanghai, China. His father was Fu Lei, a renowned Chinese translator and literary scholar. He received his initial piano instruction from Mario Paci, founder of the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra. In 1953, he studied at the Warsaw Conservatory, where he was a pupil of Zbigniew Drzewiecki.

Awards

• Awarded 3rd prize at the 5th International Chopin Piano Competition in 1955.
• This marked the first time a Chinese competitor received an award at the competition.
