Russian composer. He studied composition at the Moscow Conservatory under Taneyev, Arensky, and others. From 1920 to 1941, he served as a professor in the composition department of the same conservatory. From 1938 to 1948, he chaired the Organizing Committee of the Union of Soviet Composers.
Inheriting the tradition of Russian Romanticism, he composed operas, ballets, symphonies, symphonic poems, concertos, chamber music, and other works. He was also active as a conductor and pianist.
