Composer and conductor born in the Brittany region of France. He showed an interest in music from an early age. Although he studied law at his father's request, he later decided to pursue a career in music. After graduating from the University of Rennes in 1885, he entered the Paris Conservatoire, where he studied composition with Dubois and Massenet. From 1887, he left the Conservatoire and studied with Franck. From 1894, he worked as director of the Nancy Conservatoire and as a concert conductor, and from 1919, he held similar positions in Strasbourg. From 1929, he retired to his hometown and dedicated himself to composition. He became a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts from 1949. His representative works include the opera Le Pays (The Homeland) and the symphonic poem La Cloche des Morts (The Bell of the Dead).
Ropartz's works are characterized by beautiful melodies and a distinctive, splendidly fantastical compositional style.
