An Irish composer who also worked as a pianist. His approximately 20 nocturnes are highly regarded for their pioneering position in music history, preceding Chopin's nocturnes.
After making his debut as a pianist in Dublin, he studied under Clementi and went on concert tours with him. From the 19th century onwards, he moved to St. Petersburg and died in Moscow. In addition to his nocturnes, he composed 7 piano concertos, 4 piano sonatas, and 6 rondos.
