Born in Geneva on January 8, 1812, Thalberg is said to have been the illegitimate son of Count Moritz Dietrichstein and Baroness Wetzlar, both of noble birth. At the age of 10, he visited Vienna and received initial instruction from a bassoonist of the Imperial Court Opera Orchestra. Subsequently, he studied under S. Sechter, a master of composition theory, and the renowned pianists and composers Hummel and Czerny. Thalberg, who "effortlessly" acquired supreme performance technique, became a favorite of the salons at 14 and published his first work at 16. His first stage appearance in Paris was in 1834.
