Janina Garścia (born 1920 in Krakow) was active as a music teacher and composer. After graduating from the W. Żeleński Music School in Krakow in 1945 (where she studied piano with O. Strzępkowa), she taught at the same school from 1945 to 1950. Concurrently, she studied composition with S. Wiechowicz and conducting with A. Malawski at the State Higher School of Music in Krakow. From 1951, she taught piano at the preparatory course of the State Music School in Krakow. For her works for children, she received numerous awards, including the Gold Badge from the City of Krakow in 1975 and a medal from the National Education Commission in 1979. In 1983, she was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta.
Janina Garścia's numerous works enriched the world of children's literature studied in schools, and her repertoire became enduringly valuable. This was primarily achieved through her excellent responsiveness to the needs of schools and her creation of interesting and colorful timbres that transcended major and minor tonalities. As a composer, Garścia was most interested in the piano and wrote works for elementary education. She passed away in Krakow in March 2004.
