The "Battle of Insects" depicts grasshoppers, mantises, and rhinoceros beetles engaging in futile battles... well, that's true, but the concept is that "battle" is, after all, merely a dance. Of the four movements, the first three are nearly atonal and all in 3/4 time. The fourth movement, a short movement of less than a minute, is tonal and in 4/4 time, concluding with a beautiful piece titled "A Wish for Peaceful Days (Peaceful Days Do Not Last Long)".
Grasshopper
The "Grasshopper" movement primarily features superimposed fourths, creating a sense of a chase.
Mantis
The "Mantis" movement was the most well-received by performers. It builds up with a slightly fast tempo, pursuing its own kind of "coolness." If playing strictly according to the score feels too subdued, a few unwritten accents may be added to evoke a sense of exhilaration.
Rhinoceros Beetle
The "Rhinoceros Beetle" movement is majestic, yet it carries a certain frustration, as if unable to break through. A "mysterious" melody sung over a C# bass in the middle section loses its mystery when sung over a D in the subsequent passage.
A Wish for Peaceful Days
The final movement, "A Wish for Peaceful Days," concludes with a purification of the heart and a yearning for peace.
