Canis Major (Song of the Slave) is a work with a profound and serious atmosphere. At the beginning, a chord of five notes sounded simultaneously from the lowest register is striking, symbolizing the solemn atmosphere of the entire piece. Under a slow tempo setting of quarter note = 40, Grave (solemnly) would be appropriate. To deeply express the poignant resonance of the piece, strict adherence to the tempo is required.
Particularly, the 32nd-note E in measure 15 is struck strongly with forte and is repeated a total of five times throughout the piece. The resonance of this E is a crucial element that heightens the tension of the piece, and it is important to ensure that each instance stands out clearly. While aiming for power, it is advisable to focus on a touch that firmly grasps the core of the sound, rather than merely striking forcefully.
Throughout the piece, care must be taken to utilize the resonance of the low register without compromising the somber atmosphere. By using the pedal appropriately to prevent the sound from becoming muddy, and by paying meticulous attention to the connection of notes and the timing of pauses, the deep emotion of the piece will be more easily expressed.
