Composed as a tribute to Anne Landa, who made significant contributions to piano education in Australia, and commissioned by John Sharp. This collection of 12 pieces was conceived as a successor to his “Five Bagatelles,” a work composed 12 years earlier. However, unlike “Five Bagatelles,” which was composed with surging energy, this work was meticulously crafted after extensive deliberation. Each of the 12 short pieces exhibits a strong individuality.
According to the composer’s notes, the work can be performed as excerpts from any of the 12 pieces, and in any order. However, if the entire work is performed, it is preferable to play it straight through from beginning to end. The score includes words accompanying each prelude. However, these do not carry any unduly serious meaning. Vine himself explained them as being “of the same order as Satie’s performance instruction ‘Take off your glasses’.”
