This work is included in Six pièces de concert pour piano, a piano collection published by Rideau Rouge (later absorbed by Durand). In addition to Pierre-Max Dubois, the collection features works by Damase (Tarantella, Carillon) and Jean Guillou (Nocturne, Impromptu). Dubois's two included pieces are both light-textured miniatures. Each is independent and may be played separately.
Ritornello
While "Ritornello" is a form in Baroque music, here it signifies something akin to "a piece with a recurring theme." It is marked Allegretto, in 2/4 time, and in C major. The piece develops freely around a theme imbued with refined humor, repeatedly returning to the theme unexpectedly. It delights with its capricious mood and elegant modulations.
Aubade
Although "Aubade" is generally understood as a "morning song" in Japanese, its essence, without even needing to cite the example of the fourth movement of Ravel's Miroirs, is a song sung at dawn by someone who has been awake all night for a specific reason. It should be noted that it is by no means music for those who went to bed early and woke up early. This particular Aubade is swift and mischievous. It is marked Vivo, in 6/8 time, and in C major. It possesses a somewhat unrefined and defiant character, as if attempting to conceal some culpability. It is a mature piece imbued with a peculiar humor.
