An ancient song passed down from the era of pagan beliefs. It is frequently sung during Christmas and has been widely known abroad since ancient times. In addition to Beethoven using it in the trio of the third movement of his String Quartet No. 8 (Razumovsky No. 2), Mussorgsky employed this melody in the coronation scene of his opera Boris Godunov, and Rimsky-Korsakov in his opera The Tsar's Bride and choral work Hymn – Song of the Dish.
