Ternary form (A-B-C).
Gappaku (月白) refers to a pale, bluish-white color reminiscent of moonlight, and as it is a traditional Japanese color, this piece employs the Japanese scale “Miyakobushi,” used in koto music, etc. [E-in scale: ascending form: E–F–A–H–D–E / descending form: E–C–H–A–F–E]. Furthermore, in the latter half of the piece, the flute is made to sing like a ryūteki or shakuhachi, composed to evoke a sense of Japanese sound and atmosphere. Throughout the entire piece, it is almost enveloped in mist, but from the differences in harmonic resonance (chord progressions, superposition of counter-melodies, melodic lines), I hope you will perceive changes in mist density, temperature, light, and wind, and deliver a rich performance. In section [B], there is a modulation to a major key (F major, the relative major of the subdominant of A minor [VI]), and only there, the mist clears, and abundant warm light pours down. I hope you will imagine the Japanese spirit and landscape and perform it dramatically.
