The principal key is F major, and it is in a one-part form.
- A [a (measures 1-8) + b (measures 9-16)]
- A [a (measures 17-24) + b (measures 25-32)]
- Coda (measures 33-41)
Measures 17-32 are essentially a repetition of the preceding identical section, with the only change being the dynamic marking shifting from piano to forte. Therefore, it is understood as a one-part form with a coda, where one large section is repeated twice.
The theme is a gentle section in F major, composed of a four-measure half cadence and a four-measure perfect authentic cadence. In the subsequent section b, after a repetition of a small two-measure phrase through sequence, it eventually concludes with a large phrase in the dominant key of C major. By employing borrowed chords from the supertonic key and secondary dominant chords, a slightly somber expression is evoked, which creates a nuance reminiscent of the work's title.
