Composed and dedicated to the French poet Léon-Paul Fargue. The 'Song' had been written previously, and the 'Dance' was added to it, with the combined work published in 1962.
The 'Song' is in F-sharp minor, 3/4 time, marked Molto cantabile. It employs the melancholic melody of the Catalan folk song "La Dama d'Aragó" (The Lady of Aragon), with modern harmonic usage and modulations further enhancing its mystical atmosphere. The lyrics express love for a beautiful lady. Although the melody is sung quietly, one can sense a hidden passionate emotion within its phrasing.
The 'Dance' is in 3/4 time. It is said to be based on the Catalan folk song "La Mala Nova" (The Bad News). The dissonant notes struck against the melody create a highly unstable and ominous sound. The approximate performance duration is 4 minutes.
