Composed in 1942. Dedicated to Arthur Rubinstein.
The standard performance time is 4 minutes, and it is highly popular among the “Songs and Dances” series. “Song” (Canto) is marked Cantabile espressivo, in E-flat minor, 4/4 time. The theme is Mompou’s original. Its melody, progressing as if in a soliloquy, is filled with anguish and sorrow. Each note is carefully articulated, almost hesitantly.
“Dance” (Danza) is marked Ritmo. E-flat minor – B-flat major. 6/8 time. A bouncing rhythm of thirds, set against a vigorous pulse, evokes excitement. Beginning with an anacrusis, the right-hand’s syncopated rhythms further propel the piece forward. As Mompou himself stated, it possesses an atmosphere reminiscent of Cuba, Brazil, and Argentina, making it a very captivating piece.
