First Movement: Allegro cantabile
E-flat major, 4/4 time. The tempo marking "Allegro cantabile" clearly shows the influence of the Mannheim School (melodic supremacy). The writing of the main theme is reminiscent of chamber music for woodwinds, enveloped in a calm and bright atmosphere. The frequently alternating dynamics are also likely an influence from the Mannheim School, but the musical idea seems to suggest the mischievousness of young Beethoven rather than aiming for performance effect.
The secondary theme from bar 11 is a lyrical melody accompanied by upper mordents and appoggiaturas, truly a "bird's song." The development section (from bar 31) repeats the main theme in the dominant key of B-flat major. At bar 41, a new theme in C minor impressively appears, and after a brilliant arpeggiated transitional passage, the recapitulation of the main theme is omitted, and from bar 56, the secondary theme is recapitulated in the tonic key of E-flat major.
