Published in 1957, "Children's Duet Collection" (こどものための連弾曲集) contains six pieces composed and arranged by Yoshinao Nakada for piano duet.
In addition to widely known children's songs such as "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star" (きらきら星よ) based on a French folk song, "The Shoes Are Ringing (Holding Hands)" (靴が鳴る(お手々つないで)) composed by Ryutaro Hirota, "Cradle Song" (ゆりかごの歌) by Shin Kusakawa, and "Medaka's School" (めだかのがっこう) by Nakada himself, the collection features humorous and light-tempo duet pieces like "Kyukkyukkyu" (きゅっきゅっきゅう) by Yasushi Akutagawa and Nakada's "The Train Runs" (汽車は走るよ). Nakada's duet piece "Let's Play, Mother" (お母さん遊ぼうよ) features a melody reminiscent of a Japanese children's song (warabe-uta) with dotted rhythms. One can sense the composer's desire for children to enjoy piano duets with a playful spirit. With the exception of a partial section in "Cradle Song," most pieces adopt a simple structure where the primo plays the main melody and the secondo provides the accompaniment.
