The piece is in a single-part form. Its structure consists of an Introduction (mm. 1-2), section a (mm. 3-10), section a1 (mm. 11-18), and a Coda (mm. 19-22).
The key is D minor. The two-measure introduction begins with an open fifth in the left hand. It is forte and possesses a powerful sound. The theme is a melodic line containing a descending perfect fourth figure, accompanied by accents, which also conveys a powerful impression.
Measures 9-10 and 17-18 are similar, but their harmonic progressions differ. Measures 9-10 constitute a half cadence moving from a double dominant to a dominant, whereas measures 17-18 are a perfect cadence, descending with four quarter notes repeating tonic → dominant, resolving harmonically to the tonic. Both are often expressed with a crescendo, but as harmonic expressions, one reaches a peak of tension while the other is resolved and relaxed (which could also be described as having a sense of stability); therefore, this difference should be conveyed. The coda utilizes a IV with an added sixth, making it, in fact, a plagal cadence.
Although this piece is at an elementary level within Gillock's oeuvre, it nonetheless contains characteristic Gillockian colorful harmonic expressions.
