The main key is F major. The piece depicts a contrast in scale, portraying a grandfather clock as a large clock and a wristwatch as a small clock. For example, in the opening two measures, two half notes imitate the sound of a grandfather clock, while the subsequent measures 3-4 express the delicate ticking sound of a wristwatch through quarter notes. This is also expressed through changes in register and harmony in section b.
