Under the title, "Dissonances expressives" (Expressive Dissonances) is stated as the theme of this piece. It is a contrapuntally written waltz. The left hand simultaneously performs the waltz accompaniment and a counter-melody. Both hands utilize chromaticism, and the dissonances formed by their interplay create a melancholic atmosphere. The right hand features contrasting phrases marked mf and p. The p phrase, though played in the high register, should be performed with a resonant, penetrating, singing tone. The final six measures are marked Meno, where the tempo slows down and the waltz rhythm ceases. The final phrase should be sung expressively amidst a rich sonority.
