Below the title, “Travail des sonorités” (Handling sonorities) is written as the theme of this piece. The chromatic movement in the left hand in the opening four measures is at a sleep-inducing pp, and should gradually lead towards the more expansive fifth measure. From measure 5, the right hand is written with a large undulation created by long note values, while the left hand is written with a small undulation created by short eighth notes, indicating different amplitudes of undulation. Both hands should be played with a soft, legato sound. In both hands, chromatic notes are frequently used, and the resulting sonorities when combined resemble the twilight state before sleep. To avoid a dry sound, be mindful of a soft touch, and make full use of finger pedaling and the damper pedal, striving to create music that invites sleep.
