A waltz in E-flat major, composed in 1840 and published in 1955. Although not formally dedicated, it is believed to have been composed for Émile Gaillard, Chopin's pupil and a banker. As Fontana published this work as a waltz after Chopin's death, it is uncertain whether Chopin originally composed it as a waltz, despite the "Sostenuto" marking at the beginning.
Characteristically, it is in binary form, with the right hand playing the melody in the first half and the left hand playing it in the second half. Consequently, despite its brevity, a clear distinction in character is established between the first and second halves. When performing, it would be beneficial to pay attention to the melodic range in this regard. Furthermore, the accompaniment assigned to the melody is elaborate, whether played by the right hand or the left, featuring elements such as the presence or absence of the first beat, and chords followed by single notes rather than single notes followed by chords.
