In measures 2, 4, and 6, the left hand should aim to express changes in weight, feeling the bass float as the harmony moves from I to II in first inversion. This harmonic movement, repeated three three times, possesses the intriguing quality of a pendulum, moving and then invariably returning to the same point. Regarding dynamics, while the first four measures are richly sung at mf, from measure 5 to the end, the music gradually crescendos from p towards mf. Since this piece is a "song," at p sections, it is recommended to sing the words to yourself (as if a monologue). Then, as you gradually come to terms with those words, feel the mental shift of beginning to sing them aloud to the outside world. Performing with this awareness will allow the performer's inner emotional journey to be intimately reflected in the music.
