While Liszt left behind many brilliant and dynamic works, this piece, though small in scale, is a composition rich in lyrical sentiment. The title "Lorelei" is synonymous with mermaids and appears in various poems and works as an ancient European mermaid legend. Liszt himself composed music for Heinrich Heine's poem "Lorelei," one such work, as a Lied. The initial version, composed in 1841 with piano accompaniment, was dedicated to Countess Marie d'Agoult. This was revised in 1856, then composed as a Lied with orchestral accompaniment in 1860, and finally completed as this solo piece in 1862. Although it underwent several charming arrangements, the piano version of "Lorelei" skillfully utilizes the piano's delicacy to vividly depict the fresh emotions of the charming mermaid who seduces humans.
