The program note from the composer's own premiere in 1917 states the following: "A stand of trees by the pasture. Silver moonlight filters through the leaves, bathing the flowing stream. A young shepherd and his quietly sleeping flock. Suddenly, a gust of wind assails this tranquility. The leaves of the trees rustle in surprise. The shepherd awakens. Yet, feeling as if still dwelling in a dream world, he simply listens, captivated by the beautiful night. In the depths of the stillness, the shepherd quietly plays his flute, accompanying the flow of the stream." (Referenced from Shunjusha: Kosaku Yamada Complete Works, Vol. 4)
