This is a substantial prelude, spanning approximately 100 measures. Although in A minor, it shares the characteristic of many pieces in this key, being very powerful and dramatic. The tension remains exceptionally high from beginning to end, and it also presents technical challenges.
In the case of such a long piece, dividing it into several sections can make it more comprehensible to the listener and help avoid a monotonous performance. The main cadences (final forms) are listed below:
- Measures 17-18: A minor
- Measures 26-27: C major
- Measures 39-40: E minor
- Measures 54-55: A minor
- Measures 85-86: A minor
Immediately preceding a cadence, there is a tendency for note values to become shorter (more intricate). For each cadence, establish a direction such that the cadence itself becomes the point of highest tension and the peak of that section. Furthermore, after each cadence, reduce the volume once before progressing towards the next cadence.
