Takayoshi Hirayoshi's "The Story of Waves" is, as its title suggests, a work that depicts the scene woven by the gentle movement of waves through sound. As indicated by the instruction "gently swaying" at the beginning, it is important to maintain a natural, unforced flow and a soft expression throughout the piece. The score repeatedly features long slurs representing large waves and short slurs indicating small waves, which are combined as if in a two-part dialogue. Since there are subtle variations in how the slurs are applied, it is necessary to carefully ascertain, both visually and aurally, where each cohesive unit begins and ends.
The breaks in the left and right hand slurs often do not coincide, requiring careful alignment of the phrase endings. It is advisable to take your time and, through slow practice, perceive the changes in breath and movement associated with each slur. From measure 9 onwards, the left-hand slurs become very short, spanning single notes; here, it is crucial to focus on the left hand and ensure that the notes do not become connected. Both hands ascend simultaneously, showing a natural increase in intensity according to "poco a poco cresc.", but the resulting mf should not be a strongly assertive sound; rather, a rich, resonant quality is desired.
Throughout the piece, by delicately expressing the gentle undulation of waves ebbing and flowing, and the subtle changes within them, the charm of this composition will be conveyed more profoundly.
