This work is written to reflect the solemn and devout atmosphere of a religious ceremony. While much of the piece requires expression at f, it is important to maintain a low center of gravity and focus on a calm resonance to prevent the sound from becoming harsh. Through a rhythm that suggests a steady pace and quietly progressing harmonies, the piece as a whole depicts a solemn eucharistic procession.
The tempo should be kept stable throughout, striving not to disrupt the solemn atmosphere. Although the slurs are notated briefly, in performance, it is advisable to conceive of phrases in four-bar units and imagine string instruments to create a natural flow. The sixteenth-note melodies appearing in measure 7 and the final four measures should not be strictly aligned with the beat; rather, they require a free expression, emphasizing their motion.
Regarding balance, for instance, in the left hand from the second beat of measure 16 onwards, it is crucial to center the resonance on the bass notes, creating a rich and broad ff without excessive force. Furthermore, the symbolic repeated 'D' in the bass starting from measure 24 demands concentration to maintain uniformity and equal duration at pp.
In performance, it is essential to play with the image of maintaining a low center of gravity, carefully sensing the energy between notes. For notes of longer duration, in particular, consideration for volume and tone quality is necessary to ensure the resonance sustains naturally.
