From the very beginning of the piece, it is clearly demonstrated that this is a duo sonata for obbligato violin and piano, with the violin initially carrying the melodic line, a characteristic that completely distinguishes it from the “accompanied keyboard sonatas” of the preceding era.

Formal Aspects

Several points are noteworthy regarding its formal aspects:

• Firstly, although it is in Allegro sonata form, it reverses the typical characterization where the main theme is lively and the subordinate theme is lyrical; instead, the main theme is graceful and the subordinate theme is active.
• The second point is the relative weight of the development section and the coda. Both are of nearly equal length; while the development section is brief, consisting of simple repetitions of figures using material from the subordinate theme, the coda is central, featuring the opening melody of the main theme, thus making the two sections equal in importance. This can be considered a tendency different from that of the Mozart generation. The modulation into the coda via chromatic progression (F→F#) also delivers a striking impact.
